Don’t Use Sample Files as Actual Company Files – You are given samples files to use for practice and to see how to set up your own company information for payroll. These are not templates. Do not use the sample files for your company data.

Don’t Write a Check and Forget to Apply the Payment to the Bill – You have two options for paying your bills. You can choose “Enter Bills & Pay Bills” or “Write Checks or Enter Credit Card Charges.” Even if you choose the first option, you can still pay with a check or credit card. The point is to pick one option and stick with it.

Don’t Enter Invoices and Then Make a Deposit Without Going Through the Receive Payments Step – When it’s time to enter your invoices, be sure to use the receive payments screen. You cannot jump right to the “Make Deposit” screen or else the file will not show that a payment was received.

Don’t Accidentally Record Your Customer Payment Twice – When you go to the “Receive Payment” screen, the money will be automatically put in the “Un-deposited Funds” account. When you go to the “Make Deposits” window, be sure to include the money in the “Payments to Deposit” window. Now the funds will move to the bank account.

Don’t Rename the Critical Accounts QuickBooks Created for You – You can really mess up a software program if you go in and change names. You will have all sorts of problems and errors. If you make a mess of the account names and everything goes haywire, then you will spend a lot of your precious time fixing it yourself.
